Week 86, Volume 86

Just recently on a flight to New Jersey I watched a documentary, Free Solo. I highly recommend watching this film. It will elevate your belief on what is humanly possible in any arena. This film profiles Alex Honnold, a climber, who has gone down in history as the only person to free climb El Captain, a 3,000-foot vertical rock formation located in Yosemite park. The New York Times wrote that “Alex Honnold’s free solo climb should be celebrated as one of the great athletic feats of any kind, and I truly would have to agree it is right up there at the top.

One particular scene really caught my attention. One afternoon after a practice climb, Alex sat in his van journaling his notes on the climb. He identified every crack, every crevasse, every nook and cranny. Each step hold was identified at each location where a foot would go. He explained in great detail how his thumb would fit into a particular point in the climb and turning it before release. Alex was deliberating practicing implicit practice or better referred to as mental rehearsal. This is nothing more than a cognitive rehearsal in his preparation of his climb mentally mapping out the task in great detail.

The take away is that if you can prepare to climb a vertical rock, you can mentally prepare for a task well before the actual event. Not once did he identify what he didn’t want to happen. Alex focused all of his mental energy in a relaxed and almost peaceful approach to what he wanted to happen, success. Mental rehearsal research has shown that both your mental and physical performance is enhanced. In all your endeavors, whether in business, sports or any performance, visualize yourself calm, peaceful, stress free and confident so you can perform at your best.

“See in your mind exactly what you want, then go and apply the necessary action to make it happen.”
