Week 74, Volume 74
Cal Newport, Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World, said: “Human beings, it seems are at their best when immersed deeply in something challenging.” The idea of just showing up is working hard. Look around you, at work, the gym, the pool, at class. Going through the motions is simply working hard. The hard work starts when you decide that this is the day you will adapt the 1% percent rule:
- I will expand and develop myself by 1% better than I was yesterday
- I will absorb the innocuous details and apply them in all I do
- I will no longer make convenient excuses
- I will not be superficial, I will do the deep work
Going through the motions, that’s working hard. Anybody can do that. Let today be the day to rise above your own mediocrity, only measuring yourself against yourself. Make the decision to embrace all the hard work necessary to finally push past your self-imposed limitations. Choose growth, change and expansion. It was Naval Ravikant who said: “The means of learning are abundant, it’s the desire to learn that is scare.”
Today is the day to desire, demand the best of yourself and develop and embrace the idea that changes come from doing the deep work, the hard work.
