In June, I had the absolute pleasure to sit in a conference and listen to Tom Bilyeu speak.
Here is a guy who is a millionaire a couple times over and has built and owned multiple-million dollar companies. Despite the amount of resources and opportunities to glide through the rest of his life, he is now focused and galvanized to the business of changing lives. He once said: “It’s not OK to ask the world to stop so you can step in front.” Bam! Like a dart between my eyes, he was telling me, despite talent and predisposition, I was going to have to work my ass off. Yes, doing the hard work to finally craft my abilities. There are no hacks, secrets or five easy minutes to success. No, you are going to need to bring your A game every single day and crush it.
Two hundred and eight days ago, yes, I am counting, I stated a journey of self-discovery to really see what I am made of; and, like anyone else, many things I discovered and identified in this pilgrimage have pleased me and others I hold myself in contempt. I was guilty of stepping back and watching people who excel in any specific arena in life and admire them and their accomplishments. I was also at fault for thinking that could not happen to me. Bilyeu goes on to say: “…you are more willing to believe that it was God-given and they were anointed with it than they just worked their ass off.” Do the hard work was the clear message I heard for in the concept of Hard Work is where I will meet myself and learn that adversity, trials, suffering, pain, doubts, uncertainty, hesitations, agony, setbacks, distress, grief and heartbreak are necessary to forge and shape me into the man I want to be.
You have a choice to sit back and watch the world go by or jump onto the merry-go-round while it’s still moving and take the chance to go after what you want with a fervent and absolute burning obsession. No more excuses, no more fabricated lies to best fit our state of mind.
Frank Ocean elegantly summed up my quest: “We all know we have a finite period of time, I just feel if I’m going to be alive, I want to be challenged, to be immortal as possible. The path to that isn’t an easy way but it’s rewarding.”
